Whether you are local or visiting Great Yarmouth from further afield, something to look out for is a show at the Great Yarmouth Hippodrome. During summer 2024, you can expect to watch the Summer Circus & Water Spectacular: Champions!
About the Hippodrome Circus
Built in 1903 by circus showman George Gilbert, the Hippodrome is one of the only purpose-built circus buildings that still stands! Over the years, the building has been host to a number of amazing events and performers such as The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Julian Moscow State Circus, Chinese State Circus, Circus of Horrors and even BBC Question Time
The building was purchased by Peter Jay in 1979, who went on to restore the sinking floor in 1981. The Hippodrome is still in the Jay family, with Jack Jay as ringmaster!

Champions!
This year, the Summer Circus and Water Spectactular is back with a bit of a difference. The theme of the show for 2024 is Champions, in line with the fact that the Olympics are also on this year. Gathered here are some of the world’s best performers, all in one place.
We’re used to a fun and thrilling show at the Hippodrome and it’s always family-friendly. Champions is no different and there’s a great variety of performers to enjoy. This includes basketball tricks, trampoline artists, champion biker Andrei Burton, a juggler, and of course, the swimmers (just to name a few)!
We all loved the variety of acts this year, although they felt a bit safer than usual. Andrei Burton was a favourite as his bike stunts had us holding our breath! I also really enjoyed the juggler who use tennis rackets and the basketball act.
In-between act, you can expect great comedy from Jack Jay and Johnny Mac. We love these two and Jack Jay is a great host. The pair make the show really fun and light-hearted, giving the perfect pauses between exciting acts. No matter how many times we have been to the Hippodrome, the jokes are always different so you won’t see the same thing twice.
I can’t forget to mention the water aspect of the show, where the stage floor turns into a swimming pool. The transition this year and the Titanic theme was hilarious, with fitting music to go with it all. We always enjoy watching the swimmers in the water, all wearing bright costumes so you can see them easily. This part of the show is really different from anything you’ll see elsewhere and we love it!
Meet the hosts!
Although not guarenteed, Jack Jay and Johnny Mac tend to hang around after the show to take photos with the audience! Erin loves to get a photo each time, because Johnny is her absolute favourite. They’re always so patient, especially when I try to take quite a few photos!
