Lyndsey and Erin with a goat at Snettisham Park

The O'Hallorans

The OHallorans

We’re made up of Lyndsey, John and Erin, who all love a new adventure. We try to get away as much as possible, especially during school holidays and variety is a must for us. That means staying anywhere from a luxury hotel to a hostel and it’s not often we go to the same place twice.

Snettisham Park is a great place to spend the day on a farm with the family. From feeding cuddly lambs to hopping on a tractor safari, there’s something for everyone.

A day on the farm

Snettisham Park farm is a working farm but there’s so much to do during your day out. There’s a list of daily activities in the reception area so it’s a good idea to take a photo of these so you can refer back to it. The activities available include:

  • Feeding lambs
  • Helping to make cow feed for the calves
  • Egg collecting and weighing them
  • Pony grooming

Many of these activities are repeated throughout the day which means you can either do them more than once or find a time that suits you.

Feeding the lambs

Erin’s particular favourite activity was feeding the lambs and we did this at every chance we got. There was plenty of sessions available, especially as feeding the younger and older lambs were separate. Staff are on hand to let you know how to bottle feed the lambs and what to do after they were finished drinking their bottle. With the older lambs, children are able to herd them back into the pens themselves, which was loads of fun to watch.

Collecting chicken eggs

Something I hadn’t seen anywhere before was being able to collect fresh farm eggs. Staff will show you to the chicken coops, where you can collect a basket full of fresh eggs, before weighing them and sorting them into sizes. It was fun to do something different with the small animals here, and it was educational too.

Buying animal feed

For 50p a bag, you can buy bags of food for the goats at the visitor centre. It was great to see food at such a reasonable price. This meant that we were able to buy a few bags without feeling like it added too much extra money to our day.

What did we enjoy the most?

In-between the activity times you are able to walk around the farm and visit the animals as you wish. We all really enjoyed seeing the animals and finding which were our favourites. I had a particular favourite brown goat while Erin seemed to really love the cows. The calves were adorable and none of us expected them to be so friendly. Erin loved being able to not only stroke the cows but be licked by them too! You’ll also find rabbit hutches, guinea pigs and tortoises!

Experience the deer safari

For an additional fee, you can go on an amazing 45 minute deer safari adventure on a tractor trailer. It’s a good idea to book this in advance if possible, as during busy periods it can be booked up quickly. Various times are available during the day.

The deer safari starts just a minute’s walk away from Snettisham Park’s visitor centre and can be accessed via the farm. You are advised to head to the start of the deer safari around 10 minutes before it is due to start, as well as picking up some deer food from the visitor centre (included in the price).

The deer safari is family-friendly although I didn’t see that there was space for pushchair or prams on board. Smaller children will need to sit on parent’s laps while older children can sit independently. The seats are benches so quite roomy and we didn’t feel squished in at all, even though it was busy.

During the 45 minute experience, the deer safari goes off the farm and round to some land where the deer live. We were introduced to the three stags, as well as a field full of female deer and babies. You are able to feed all of the deer that come up to the trailer, although the stags are only allowed one handful of food per person.

The deer are quite forceful so this might be something to consider for younger children. Erin wasn’t bothered at all though and loved that the deer kept trying to get as much food from her as possible. Some even tried to steal the bag of food!

This was an experience we haven’t seen anywhere else in Norfolk and its definitely worth paying the extra for.

Food and drink

Snettisham has a lovely little tearoom serving a range of food from breakfasts to sandwiches and jacket potatoes. There is an indoor seating area, as well as a covered outdoor area.

Although we didn’t use the cafe on this occasion, we did see people eating and the food looked lovely. Instead, we opted to bring a picnic and eat outside.

Enjoy the play area

As well as the enjoying time with the farm animals, Snettisham also has quite a large children’s play area. This consists of climbing equipment, slides, climbing and ride on tractors. It was nice to have somewhere for Erin to run around in-between activities and this really helped us to make the most of our day at Snettisham.

Although Snettisham wasn’t somewhere I’d heard much about before we visited, it’s one of the best animal themed days out in Norfolk. I am so glad we visited the farm and I’ve since been shouting about it to friends resulting in them visiting too! Add this one to your list for your next family day out if you want to get up close to the animals!
