Visiting Hydropolis
An entrance not to be missed
To start with, Hydropolis has one of the most amazing entrances that I’ve ever seen. During the warmer months, a water printer creates a really cool wall of water, complete with changing shapes and patterns. The water printer spans as much as 46.5 m in length and it is Europe’s longest installation of this kind. You can enter the building via the back of the water or you can wait for a gap in the pattern and make a run for it!
Cafe, cloakroom and shop
Before you go into the exhibition, there is time to visit the cafe, cloakroom and shop in the entrance zone. Firstly, I love that there’s a cloakroom that has lockers as it means you don’t have to carry everything around with you. Secondly, the gift shop is amazing. I think this shop is the best I have been to at a museum for a while. Everything is water themed, including selling umbrellas. Of course, you can get Hydropolis themed merchandise too such as notebooks and magnets.
Inside the exhibits
Although Hydropolis isn’t huge, there is a lot to see. It is broken up into 7 thematic zones, which you can follow around easily thanks to a blue line on the floor. As you enter the Hydropolis exhibition, you’ll be blown away by the huge model of plant Earth. Watch a short 360-degree film about our ‘water planet’. This is a great way to start your visit and it really shows that this is museum uses diverse multimedia technologies.
There are plenty of hands on areas, perfect for educational visits. There are information-rich touch screens and displays where you can find out about the properties of water and ice. One of my personal favourites was the steam to fire display, where you can put your hands in the fire because it doesn’t burn! As you walk around, you’ll find all kinds of things to amaze you.
There’s a fantastic model of Wroclaw, which is interactive. Here, you can look at different areas of the city, including old town, and how water is used. You can light up different areas of the model to look at one place at a time. I imagine this is a great place for school trips in Wroclaw, to learn more about the history of the city and how different areas are used.
Don’t miss the relaxation zone
Towards the back on the right hand side, you’ll find the ‘Relaxation Zone’. This was a very welcome surprise in somewhere I can only really describe as ‘perfect for a school trip’. I was not expecting a huge wall of greenery, a ‘moss’ wall, along with curvy (plastic) beds to relax on. Take 5 or 10 minutes to lay back and relax before you carry on with your visit at Hydropolis.
Temporary exhibitions
Some of the exhibitions are only temporary. You’ll find the area of these in the middle of Hydropolis.
How long should you spent at Hydropolis Wroclaw?
Depending on how much you like to read about each area, you should plan to spend between 1 and 2 hours at Hydropolis. We stayed for around an hour, reading about the different parts that interested us the most.
Would I visit again?
If you’re on a short break to Wroclaw, especially with children, then make sure you add Hydropolis to your list of places to visit. I absolutely loved this place and it is so different from anywhere I’ve been before. There is lots for both children and adult to do, with a nice mix of interactive interactive installations and information.
