A day with the animals at Wroclaw Zoo

The O'Hallorans

The OHallorans

We’re made up of Lyndsey, John and Erin, who all love a new adventure. We try to get away as much as possible, especially during school holidays and variety is a must for us. That means staying anywhere from a luxury hotel to a hostel and it’s not often we go to the same place twice.

If you’re visiting Wroclaw and want to get out of the city for the day, head to Wroclaw Zoo! It’s a great place for families and solo travellers, with so much to see. From monkeys to giraffes and elephants to toirtoises, this zoo has it all!

Wroclaw Zoo map

A wild day at the zoo

I love visiting a zoo when I’m travelling and I was so excited about Wroclaw Zoo. After looking at the map in advance online, I couldn’t wait to see some of my favourite animals, as well as seeing some new ones.

Don’t miss the Afrykarium

The largest oceanarium in Poland is dedicated exclusively to African wildlife. Afrykarium’s guiding principle is to showcase the diverse aquatic ecosystems of the African continent, under the theme “Life-giving waters of Africa.” Out of 14 design proposals, the concept by ArC2 was selected. Afrykarium opened its doors on October 26, 2014, becoming Poland’s first oceanarium and the world’s only one focused on the flora and fauna of Africa. This addition has made Wrocław Zoo the biggest tourist attraction in Poland.

You’ll want to make sure you prioritise a visit to the Afrykarium during your time at the zoo. You can’t miss it either as it’s one of the biggest attractions and in a huge building. There can sometimes be a long line to get in, depending on the number of visitors that day so try to visit in the morning if you can.

Inside you’ll find such a wonderful range of animals. Organised by landscape, the various ecosystems include specific areas like Madagascar, Congo River jungle, Lake Tanganyika, Lake Malawi, the Red Sea, and the coast of Namibia. There are signs in both English and Polish so you’ll know what you’re looking at. You can expect to see animals such as Nile Hippos, Manatees, so many different species of fish, free-flying birds and huge sharks! It’s quite hot in the Afrykarium, thanks to the replicated lush vegetation, high temperature and humidity inside the building. One of my favourite areas was the underwater tunnel but there might be a long queue if you want to get a good picture here.

Discover the enclosures and pavillions

Wroclaw Zoo is one of the bigger European zoos and there are plenty of other enclosures and pavillions to discover. While the Afrykarium might be the biggest attraction of the zoo for some, I really enjoyed walking around and discovering what other animals I could find. We were very luck to see both adult and baby giraffes out eating first thing in the morning as well as elephants out playing in the afternoon. You can also go inside the elephant house if they’re not outside. Other fantastic areas was the Terrarium and Butterfly House, which was much larger than I had imagined. Who knew that there was so many different kinds of turtles and tortoises.

A lot of the outdoor enclosures were really large, which was nice to see. I hate a zoo where the animals aren’t looked after properly but at Wroclaw Zoo, you can see that the animals are put first. Depending on how long you have, it might not be possible to go around the entire complex in just one day. We didn’t really have a plan when it came to looking at the animals, and we just stopped anywhere that looked interesting and fun as we walked around.

Food and drink at the zoo

We found finding food that we wanted to eat at the zoo quite difficult. The website isn’t great for knowing what food you can get there in advance so we had to figure it out on the day. My sister is vegan and no matter where we looked, there wasn’t much choice for her.

In the end, we found an outdoor kiosk which served a range of food. Instead of risking it, we went for a safe breaded chicken fillet and chips for me and chips for my sister. The chicken and chips with a side salad cost around £11.50.

The zoo does have other indoor restaurants serving things like sandwiches and pizza.

Visitng with children

Although I didn’t visit as a family this time, I think Wroclaw Zoo is a great place for children. There are lots of shaded places if you need a break from the sun as well as plenty of toilets. Children will enjoy playing at the numerous outdoor play areas and if needed, you can hire carts/ trailers at the entrance if you don’t have a pushchair.

Don’t forget to take part in the stamp trail and find some of the zoo’s dwarfs!

How long do you need at Wroclaw Zoo?

As I’ve said before, this is a big zoo, and one of the largest zoos in Europe. Although you can spend half a day here, it would be wise to plan for the whole day.

Wroclaw Zoo is the perfect place for a fun day out while visiting the city. It’s only a short distance from downtown Wrocław and easily accessible by public transport. As zoos go, this has been one of my favourites!
